About Us

About Us

Aiea Hongwanji Mission is a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temple. It is one of 35 branch temples affiliated with the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii which is located at 1727 Pali Highway, in Honolulu. Aiea Hongwanji Mission was established in 1902 and has been serving the Aiea community for over a century.  


Remember, Reflect, and Renew, we focus our efforts to make Buddhism accessible to the wider community through religious and educational programs. Our mission is to share the living Teachings of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism so that all beings may enjoy lives of harmony, peace, and gratitude.


Come learn and join the Sangha (Fellowship) and share in the Dharma (Teachings) of the Buddha.

The Soshiki Service is a formal ceremony to offer final respects to the deceased.

Weddings & Civil Unions

Wedding ceremonies are usually offered before an altar with the traditional wedding party in attendance with family and friends witnessing the exchanging of vows.

Infant Initiatory Rights

-

The first-visit ceremony is usually held on the 30th or 100th day after birth. This ceremony symbolizes the presentation of a newborn infant before the shrine of Amida Buddha to share the joy with others and pledge before the Buddha to raise the child as a responsible Buddhist.

Dedication Services

-

The home dedication service is done in appreciation for the many blessings of Amida and invites the light of Amida Buddha's infinite wisdom and compassion into the newly established residence.

Bedside Service or Makuragyo Service

-

The Bedside Service was originally established for a person approaching death to express their appreciation to Amida Buddha for the Nembutsu life. Family members and close friends gather at this person's beside, living or deceased, to express their gratitude to Amida Buddha for His Great Compassion. Today, the service is usually held soon after death.
